Among the most impressive vantage points are the Welterbesteig trail above Dürnstein, the ruins of Dürnstein itself, and the high-altitude trails around Weißenkirchen and Spitz. From here, you can enjoy views of the Danube, the stone terraces and the vineyards – particularly atmospheric in the early morning or late afternoon.

The soil and the art of winemaking
Between Mitterarnsdorf, Spitz and Dürnstein, the Wachau region shows itself from its most concentrated side. Steep terraces stretch across the slopes above the Danube, supported by primary rock, gneiss and mica schist. These barren soils store heat, allow water to drain away quickly and force the vines to root deeply. What grows here is not a product of chance, but the result of patience, manual labour and careful observation.
Influenced by the Danube with cool nights and warm days, wines of tension and clarity are produced here. Grüne Veltliner and Riesling show less opulence than structure, mineral precision and inner calm. The winemaker's craft follows this rhythm: steep slopes require manual labour, decisions are made in the vineyard, and interventions in the cellar are deliberately kept to a minimum. Time thus becomes the central factor – for origin, expression and maturity.
We had a shared vision of how we wanted to make wine. And who knows, perhaps what we are doing will mark a new chapter in the history of winegrowing in the Wachau region.
A prime example of this is the Von der Vogelwaide winery in Mitterarnsdorf. Daniel Vogelwaid and Michael Donabaum cultivate their vineyards with a keen sense of place, soil and social structures. Their work shows what contemporary Wachau winemaking can look like: open to new approaches, deeply rooted in the region, underpinned by trust, community and the courage to do things differently.
